Sunny Khiani - Trader
"Every day usually brings something new and exciting"
Name: Sunny Khiani
Location: Chicago
Job title: Trader
Job description: Market maker for index options. Head of the SPX desk.
I typically get in around 7:15 each morning. My product trades almost 24 hours, so I set up my systems to trade and begin immediately.
I work on a team responsible for, trading option products related to the S&P 500, both on the floor and electronically.
Communication is the most important aspect for us, and everyone has specific, well defined roles. Everyday usually brings something new and exciting.
Flat structure, and teamwork
I attended college at Washington University in St. Louis, majoring in finance and pre-med. IMC recruited on campus and I’ve been working here since.
I wanted to work in an environment that had a flat structure and focused on teamwork. IMC gives its employees a great deal of responsibility, experience, and freedom right from the beginning. I think I fit the IMC mold as someone who is competitive, honest, hard working, and team oriented.
Dealing with stress
Stress is a natural part of the job, but you get used to dealing with the pressure. We usually finish the bulk of trading around 3:15 and spend the next few hours having meetings or making improvements to the desk.
Success is tough to define on a day to day basis. It comes down to the decisions you make throughout the day, what you improve during the day, what you learn for the next day, and how much money you make.
We started the SPX desk about a year ago and we’re making good headway. The ultimate goal is to have a successful desk, which can be defined in many ways.
Winning and losing
When we reach a milestone, we like to celebrate with a big night out. There’s no easy way to deal with disappointment – I take losing much harder than I enjoy winning.
I usually stay until around 6:30 then go out with friends, watch TV, or play basketball.
