John Taylor - Java Developer
"IMC recruits smart people, and we are continuously looking to improve"
Name: John Taylor
Location: Sydney
Job title: Java Developer
Job description: Part of the ‘Core-Trading Development Team’. Working on the our propietary trading software, developing new features and fixing bugs.
I am the only member of my team in Sydney, but tasks are allocated by my overall team leader. My work is less stressful than that of a trader, but deadlines can create pressure and solving problems is rewarding.
Experience across the sector
I studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bristol in the UK, graduating in 1992. Since then I’ve worked as a developer for a few different companies, mostly in the financial markets industry. I’ve worked at a few different exchanges, developing their order matching platforms. I’ve also worked on automated front office trading applications.
I was looking for a job where I could learn more about the business side of derivatives trading, but also build on my technical experience by working on complex software in a modern development environment. I could see this would be possible at IMC.
Interesting and challenging
I also liked the size and culture of the company. IMC recruits smart people, and we are continuously looking to improve. And if you have a good idea it will be recognized.
There's always more work to do than there is time to do it. But it’s interesting and challenging, I’m learning a lot and there’s a good development environment.
I always get time for lunch. If I'm making good progress on something stay later in the evening, but not too often as I get more done if I stay refreshed.
Extensive travel
One of the great things about IMC is the traveling. So far I’ve had four trips to Amsterdam – four weeks each time. I’ve also spent three weeks in the Chicago office and a couple of weeks in Hong Kong.
I guess I measure each day by the amount of progress I've made or how much I've achieved. And I try to analyze why it was a good or bad day. Basically, I hope that our software will play an even bigger part in making IMC more successful.
At the end of the day and at the weekend I relax by playing sport - tennis, football, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, motor racing, and sailing. I also like to travel and meet up with friends.
